Don't be mistaken: aluminium cases are worse than steel. They are often not thicker than steel cases which makes them less sturdy, more rattly and aluminium doesn't cool better than steel in a pc case where there are no objects in direct touch with the outer casing.. Harddisks for example tend to make aluminium cases rattle a lot easier than a steel case; especially if the steel case has soft rubber gromets supplied with it to mount the harddisks

Depends on if noise is an issue of course..

Antec SLK3000 is pretty solid, thick steel, options for 120mm fans and rubber grommet HD mounting.. A steel case that is quite a steal.. hohoho :P

If the thought of driving a Ferrari 312 / Lotus 49 / Eagle Weslake ~400hp ~600kg MONSTER on the Nurburgring doesn't make your body produce all sorts of fluids, then I doubt which planet this guy or gal is from..

And looking at how vastly different todays sims are in their physics engines, you can't say 'its old so it can't be as good'. IMO physics are still going wrong somewhere in all sims on a pretty basic level. CPU usage is less but if a simple model does the major things good, then you'd have a better sim than a more complex sim of 2006.

You can try a few things..
1) make a 600kg 1.1G pulling low inertia slight rear weight biased car in Rfactor.. (actually don't, you KNOW it will be horrible.. )
2) play GPL..
3) Use some working version of LFStweak to give the LX6 400 horsepower..

Which of those is more believable? I'm surely going with GPL. It doesn't punish 'unrealistic' driving but don't forget Joosa Reiinienienienienkeen (sp) who has a rank of -90 or something right foot braking and using a H shifter. I wouldn't say his 'style' is what they did back then (its a 'tad' risky) but it prooves a point. And when driven with slightly more locky coast diffs, normal brake biases of 60% and smooth inputs, a sub 8 minute Nurburgring lap, judging by how the car drives and reacts to inputs, bumps, changes in load etc.. I'd trade in loads of fancy LFS physics features for it to have better BASE physics.

I didn't mention that I haven't tried any other 'unofficial' patch so I went straight to u35.

I'm not too fond of the new sounds being labeled as an improvement! I've done some spectrum analysis (basically makes it visible how 'loud' frequencies are in a sound clip) and a high revs sliding Fz50 sees the loudness drop very quickly until about 1600hz, after which the descent in loudness continues but at this point we're at -70Db (peak in this clip is about -18).. And if the majority of the sound is ~ -20dB, you barely hear some high frequencies that are at -70db!

I don't have high quality in car sound recordings but just threw in some in car videos, captured the sound and did the same..

Nurburgring Ring Mini, high revs and sliding:
Slight bass tendency, but then constant sound pressure until dropping at 11khz

Subaru Imprezza:
Drops at 3.5khz (grunty engine, poor quality video as well)

Ruf CTR ring video:
Drops after 13Khz despite old VRC rip

The Mini and RUF videos have slightly higher quality sound but one thing is clear; by no means would near absence of sound frequencies higher than ~2khz mean 'improved'! Providing of course my sound card and LFS are 'ok' and I'm not experiencing a random bug.

I would say the last physics patch, though labeled as a big improvement, was more a 'change'. For the better, yes, but when I read 'big improvement' I tend to think 'core changes'. Same with the sound; it has changed but subjectively and semi objectively not improved.

Negative, yes.. but thats my opinion on U35..

Of course this looks nice but its a big marketing thing.. The RACE game being officialy licensed, this sort of thing is bound to happen and is anything but an objective judging of real vs sim.. Well, sim... its ISI physics based so it basically all goes wrong there already

Each and every race game will sell more when some RL driver does some laps with a gamepad and says its 'spot on' even though he couldn't tell RBR from Colin Mcrae ..

For what it is worth, the RUF is rated at 0.9G .. In LFS we can get what... almost 1.2G longitudinal and 1.1 lateral? And the fz50 weighs more and has less power, yet indeed it is a bit loose.

I would also say that, although LFS is great, it is still off. A 1967 F1 car has double the power and at weighs less than the LX6, and the LX6 probably the same or more grip.. Imagine a dual power lx6 in LFS!

I've recently went back to GPL which, despite its shortcommings, is imo less wrong than all the other sims.. Plus you can't fault the idea of driving a Ferrari 312 or Eagle Weslake at the Ring, lapping sub 8 minutes..

This video pretty much sums up what makes me grin from ear to ear when it comes to 'racing'.. More specifically; car control. The challenge of a powerfull not too grippy RWD, rear weight biased car on the uber Nurburgring.. It really is better than porn! Car control that is only doable in LFS and GPL..

There is a 700MB version of the two laps available, wrong aspect ratio but that is easily corrected in media player classic. The 11 / 13 MB files don't do this justice!

Cool to read that article

Perhaps you run a slightly different view angle, perhaps the 'timing changes' that seem to be some part of the recent patches has a minor influence on input reactions or framerate, or even sound lag.. Things that don't change the physics but the 'experience' al be it slightly..

It would be a bit more complex I think.. As Tristan says, its still physically connected but it 'helps'.. Lowering FF wouldn't be the same as that would slow the FF down I would say.

Shouldn't be a big effect? I mean with no wind, cars will do near 200km/h often, which is say 50m/s, a lot more than the average LFS wind.. My guess is that ambient temperature has a way bigger effect than wind..

Obviously, there are bound to be programs that stress the processor so you should really fix the cooling problem (if there is one)..

VSYNC is perfect for LCD screens, you get nice screen buildup with no tearing and a constant smooth framerate, as long as your pc can keep up..

While LFS is probably less unrealistic than GT4, its certainly not near perfect. I would say, until it IS 'near perfect', its pointless to try and proof that LFS is what it isn't!

Don't forget that buying S2 actually gives the money directly to the devs, unlike with high street games where the publisher gets most of the $. Something feels really good knowing the cash ends up with the guys responsible for the code instead of some men in suits who are in it just for the money..
